Topic 3. Identity and differences in society

Purpose: clarifying the concept of 'identity', 'commonality' and 'differences'.

Expected results: All students should increase their knowledge of the various categories of persons with special educational needs, become familiar with other differences between people and acquire a higher level of tolerance in society.

Supporting information: Identity = sameness, likeness, similitude, likeness.

Difference = difference, distinction, distinguishing mark, peculiarity

Each person is different and has a different role in society. Society is a large group of people. Societies have different patterns of relationships (social relations) between individuals. The word 'identity' means a person's understanding of himself and the realization that he is a separate individual with his own qualities. The differences

between people in society can be based on their understandings, desires, goals, needs, skin color, ethnicity, religion. Very often children who have special needs are defined as 'different' - children who cannot hear, cannot see or have some physical impairment. Perhaps you yourself have such a child in your class?

The differences in society are also due to the diversity of different religious beliefs. Since each person is free to choose his religion, the probability of distinguishing him from the general group of people is very high.

Another type of difference in society is ethnic difference. An ethnic group, ethnos or nation is a group of people that is identified by a common heritage – history, race, kinship, religion, language, culture, territory, nationality or appearance. Members of the ethnic group are aware of their belonging to it, and people outside it recognize its existence. The word 'ethnos' comes from the Greek language and means people.

Whatever the basis of the differences, it is good to know that all people have equal rights and duties in society and should not be excluded from it. Understanding the equal rights of all members of society is called tolerance. Tolerance is a term that means tolerance and respect for differences, be they social, cultural, religious. Also, tolerance means accepting the other as he is.
