Learning activity 2.
Debate on childhood obesity
Disturbing facts!!!

Childhood obesity is one of the most serious problems of the 21st century. Currently, about 1 billion people – just over 1/7 of the world's population – are overweight, and at least 300 million of them are classified as clinically obese, reports the World Health Organization (WHO).

  • 70% of obese adolescents tend to become obese or overweight adults.
  • Over the past three decades, the number of overweight children has tripled.
  • Studies show that at least 34% of children and teenagers in the US are overweight or at risk of obesity.
  • Studies show that parents are often the most important role models for children. If children observe how their parents consume healthy foods and are physically active, they are also more likely to have such behaviors.

Discuss with your classmates the presented facts related to childhood obesity and emotional eating. Suggest preventive measures to solve this problem in your school. Prepare posters, presentations, brochures through which you will inform the school community about the problem. Organize an information campaign with your classmates, teachers and parents to present your ideas for solving the problem.
